A Zen Prayer For Overcoming Cravings

Posted on 03/14/202403/14/2024 by akindofzen.com

In the gentle silence of my heart, I seek the wisdom of the path,
Mindful of the impermanent nature of all that is,
I acknowledge the deep craving within — Bhava-tanha,
The longing for existence, for being, for becoming,
A thirst that binds the soul to the endless cycle of samsara.

With humility and reverence, I turn to the teachings of the Buddha,
The Dharma, a guiding light on the path to enlightenment,
May I cultivate right understanding, seeing through the illusion of self,
Embracing Anatta, the truth of non-self,
And recognizing the interconnectedness of all beings.

May I practice right intention, nurturing seeds of compassion and wisdom,
Letting go of attachments to identity, status, and the material world,
Finding freedom in the realization that nothing is permanent,
And peace in the acceptance of life’s ever-changing flow.

In moments of meditation and mindfulness,
May I observe the arising and passing of desires,
Without clinging or aversion, understanding their transient nature,
With each breath, may I release the craving for existence,
And with each step, walk closer to Nibbana, the ultimate liberation.

I offer gratitude for the Sangha, the community of fellow seekers,
For their support, guidance, and shared journey on the path,
Together, may we find strength in the Dharma,
And in the profound teachings of the Buddha,
May we all be free from suffering and the chains of Bhava-tanha.

May this prayer resonate with the heart of compassion,
Spreading peace and understanding in all directions,
For the benefit of all beings, near and far,
May we awaken to the true nature of existence,
And find lasting peace in the liberation from craving.
